IT Sligo launch new programmes in Project Management, BIM and Lean Construction

Building on the success of existing programmes related to Project Management, the department of Civil Engineering and Construction at IT Sligo are delighted to announce that they have been approved to launch a new online part time Post Graduate Diploma and MSc in Project Management, starting this September.

Within this new offering are many electives to cater for various sectors such as Construction, IT, Science and Manufacturing. This allows the student to tailor their own Project Management masters for their particular sector. The programme has been designed to qualify students to undergo Project Management Institute (PMI) exams such as Project Management Professional (PMP).

In addition, the following construction related embedded Special Purpose Awards are available, which can be taken independently: Certificate in BIM and Lean Construction Management, Certificate in Strategic Construction Management and Certificate in Construction Law, Procurement & Finance.

The external validation panel were made up of subject matter experts from both industry and academia, commended the programmes for their flexibility of delivery modes and pathways, the bespoke offerings, linkages to industry, online supports as wells as the expertise and vision from the programme development committee.

Trevor McSharry, Head of Department of Civil Engineering and Construction who was instrumental in this initiative commented that, ‘these programmes were developed in conjunction with our industry contacts to help address the shortage of project management skills being experienced in many industries. Having such a qualification will provide graduates of this programme with the key tools and techniques to take on increased responsibility of larger and more complex projects and also increase their appeal internally and externally of their organisation. Based on our linkages with the Lean Construction Ireland (LCI) and the Construction IT Alliance, we are very excited about the Certificate in BIM and Lean Construction Management, which we envisage will have significant demand in the market place. As Chair of the BIM North West Region, I see the digitisation of the construction sector taking hold and use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) increasing at a rapid pace. BIM enables 3D collaborative design and construction, which leads to a much more robust design as well as cost and schedule certainty. BIM works hand in hand with effective project management and Lean thinking.’

IT Sligo is the national leader in online higher education, which enables up skilling at a time and place that suits the student. These programmes build on the extensive suite of programmes already developed. IT Sligo is now taking applicants for this coming academic year, starting in September 2017.  See https://www.itsligo.ie/courses/master-science-project-management-online/ for further details to apply.
