Mahon Point Shopping Centre in Cork was opened in 2005 and is owned by one of Deka Immobilien’s open-ended real estate funds, Deka-ImmobilienEuropa and managed locally by Savills.

The centre comprises of approximately 35,000m2of retail space that is anchored by Debenhams and Tesco.

Other tenants include Next, Zara, River Island and Monsoon. It also has a range of restaurants, cafés and leisure facilities including a 13 screen Omniplex cinema. Outside of Dublin, it is the largest Shopping Centre in the Republic of Ireland.

Why BREEAM In-Use?

The client took the decision to be assessed as part of a larger strategy to maintain the asset at the forefront of retail developments in Ireland, constantly updating and modernising the centre.

The BREEAM In-Use Assessment

The Asset scored highest in categories including Waste (100%), Materials (89%), Land Use & Ecology (75%), Health & Wellbeing (74%) and Transport (70%).  The Building Management section scored highest in categories including Materials (100%), Energy (86%), Water (84%) and Management (76%).

Future Plans

The client and management team at Mahon Point will continue to work towards improving the building and have already used the BREEAM In-Use framework to make changes to policies and management processes.  The planned upgrade of the BMS system and energy metering configuration was also informed by recommendations made in the preliminary BREEAM In-Use assessment. Savills, the Management Company responsible for Mahon Point, will look to the template set out by Mahon Point with a view to implementing BREEAM In-Use at other sites.
