In 2013 Tipperary local authorities have collectively insulated over 1000 social houses throughout the county. The total cost of these upgrades amounts to €2.5 million, supporting 50 full time jobs in the region.

Paul Kenny, CEO Tipperary Energy Agency said “As a result of this work, families across North and South Tipperary will be living in much warmer homes this winter. Half a million euro in energy costs will be saved, as each household will see a fall in their energy bills of €300 to €500 every year”. Tipperary Local authorities took advantage of funding from The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and from the Department of Environment’s job stimulus package to significantly improve local authority housing. Further upgrades will be undertaken next year. Paul Kenny added “It’s a great example of how cooperation between all local authorities in Tipperary has delivered significant benefit to the citizens of the county”.
The upgrade works, including attic insulation, cavity wall insulation and installation of stoves and energy meters were co-funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) through the Better Energy Programme. Minister Pat Rabbitte, TD Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and Dr. Brian Motherway, SEAI Chief Executive, recently visited some of the insulation work in progress at Joseph’s Park in Nenagh. Dr. Motherway said “Nationally, energy retrofitting is worth hundreds of millions of euro and maintains thousands of valuable jobs. The recent budget provision of €57m to the Better Energy programmes assures the continued availability of these schemes through 2014. This will allow us add to the more than 250,000 homes already upgraded – and like the people in Joseph’s Park have warmer homes which are less costly to run”.
