Processes associated with Building Information Modelling (BIM) are evolving rapidly as the construction sector embraces 3D modelling and associated technologies. IT Sligo have piloted the use of a short course, developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to ensure the latest processes are incorporated into relevant programmes. Titled BIM Approved Graduate (“BIM AG”), graduates who complete an exam can obtain an internationally recognised certificate or micro credential.

Trevor McSharry, Head of Department of Civil Engineering and Construction said, “given the positive feedback from students, we are delighted to confirm our continued partnership with BRE to include this important embedded certification, which provides learners with a professional qualification that sets them apart from their peers and complements existing academic programmes.

The BRE Global Ireland Manager, John Whyte highlighted that “BIM AG is a stepping-stone towards as a ‘BIM Informed Professional’ or ‘BIM Certificated Practitioner’ depending on the students’ industry experience.”

The BIM AG program has been embedded within a number of our programs, namely, the BSc Hons Construction Project Management and the MSc Project Management courses. Over 70 students have gone through the program last year, with very positive feedback received from graduates:

Matthew Turver, a junior construction planner said “I found the BIM AG course both informative and relevant to industry as it showed the importance of working together, namely, having that common dominator between all disciplines in order to work collaboratively throughout.”

Sinead O Meara who is currently employed as a junior sustainability BIM Coordinator stated that “The BIM AG course was really worthwhile as it equipped me with relevant industry knowledge that enabled me to help my employer expand on their BIM capabilities. The course itself was easy to follow with informative videos and short quizzes which help keep you focused.”
