The WorldSkills ‘BIM (Revit) in Construction’ competition was hosted by Dublin Institute of Technology’s College of Engineering and Built Environment at the Bolton Street campus and took place over 2 days on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd May. The overall competition winner was Ryan Dempsey, a 4th year DIT Architectural Technology student.
WorldSkills
WorldSkills is the global hub for skills excellence and development. Through international cooperation and development between industry, government, organisations, and institutions, they promote the benefits of and need for skilled professionals through grass-roots community projects, skill competitions, and knowledge exchange. They show how important skills education and training is for youth, industries and society by challenging young professionals around the world to become the best in the skill of their choice.
Since 1950 WorldSkills has represented more than 45 skills in over 75 member countries and regions, all working together with youth, educators and industries to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future.
“The WorldSkills ‘BIM (Revit) in Construction’ competition which was the first of its kind in the world is very welcome,” DIT Lecturer and Competition Chief Examiner Malachy Mathews says. “WorldSkills are to be applauded for recognising the digital transformation happening in the design and construction industry and providing the initiative for this type of digital skills competition.”
Organising the Competition
The competition came about through a collaboration between Autodesk and WorldSkills. Autodesk provided a set of learning outcomes based on their Revit Technology curriculum and the competition was originally set over a 4 day period. Malachy Mathews was asked to take the Chief Examiner role and set the brief. He cut back the competition to 2 days and chose the learning outcomes from the architectural domain. He devised a set of 10 deliverables to test the skill and knowledge of the competitors. The competitors were provided with a set of 2D AutoCAD construction drawings for a football clubhouse located on a real site in the north-west of Ireland. The submissions were anonymised and 2 independent expert judges reviewed and marked the work.
“The brief was set at a professional standard with reference to PAS 1192 process documents,” Malachy tells us. “The standard was very high and reflects the BIM education, particularly in the discipline of Architectural Technology, in the Institutes of Technology.”
Entrants
This competition is designed for students who are interested in pursuing careers in Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or MEP Engineering, who will be active members of construction projects in the future where they would benefit from the use of connected BIM. Four 4th year AT students and one 3rd year student from DIT with three 4th year and one 2nd year students from WIT entered the competition.
Winner – Ryan Dempsey
The outright winner scoring a total of 140 points out of a possible 150 was Ryan Dempsey, a 4th year DIT Architectural Technology student. Ryan will be presented with a WorldSkills Silver medal from the Department of Education & Skills later in the year and will receive a 3D Printer donated by Autodesk at a prize-giving ceremony at the opening of the DIT School of Architecture 2018 Show on Friday, 8th June.
