The Irish Construction Excellence Awards showcased the best of the Irish BIM Community with John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd winning the BIM Excellence Award for the Multinational Data Centre Campus, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology winning the Third Level Course Award for their Higher Diploma in Engineering in BIM, and Leica Geosystems winning the Construction Product Innovation Award for their BLK360 3D scanner.
Founded in 1993, and reinvigorated for 2018, the Irish Construction Excellence Awards celebrated the best in Irish Construction and delivered a rigorous credible process of assessment. The Awards provided companies an opportunity to showcase their capabilities to the industry, clients, and Irish society.
John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd won the BIM Excellence Award for the Multinational Data Centre Campus project.
This multinational data centre project has been designated as the pilot scheme project of BIM best practice for any future data centre projects for this client. Sisk, in conjunction with RKD have demonstrated their BIM Process and Strategy to the Client’s Design Team and general contractors from around the world.
The competition in this category came from some major BIM projects: Mace’s Clonee Data Centre in County Meath; Glan Agua’s Kerry Regional Water Supply Scheme; Designer Group’s Bristol-Myers Squibb LOC building in Blanchardstown; BAM’s Museum of the Future, Dubai; and John Paul Construction’s 1 Windmill Lane.
Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology won the Third Level Course Award for the Higher Diploma in Engineering in Building Information Modelling.
The ICE Award was the third award in three weeks for this course. The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Higher Diploma in Engineering in BIM is addressing the need for leadership in this digital transition by using innovative pedagogical approaches in an interdisciplinary learning environment to address competency and skill gaps in the industry. Over 100 RPS Group staff have been upskilled since 2013 with 18 graduating from the Higher Diploma in Engineering in BIM in 2016 and 2017. Since September 2016, 68 non-RPS industry stakeholders have commenced the course.
There was strong competition in this category from Dublin Institute of Technology’s ‘MSc in aBIMM Suite Course’; IT Sligo’s Online MSc in Project Management – addressing industry skills gaps in Project Management, BIM and Lean Construction; and the Dublin Institute of Design’s ‘Revit and Level 2 Building Information Modelling’ course.
Leica Geosystems won the Construction Product Innovation Award for the Leica BLK360
Leica Geosystems’ BLK360 3D scanner, the smallest and lightest imaging laser scanner ever made, simplifies the collection of as-built reality capture data for work across several vertical markets including construction and engineering. The Leica BLK360 is able to capture real-time data at the touch of a single button, streamlining the scanning process and saving large amounts of time.
This portable device allows anyone with an iPad to create a 360 degree image that can be viewed and shared with others in a matter of minutes. The Leica BLK360 is also an industry game-changer as it opens up laser scanning to complete new audiences.
The products up for this Award included Hilti Ireland’s ON!Track asset management system; Kingspan Insulation’s Kooltherm Lower Lambda Range; Levelling Equipment Services’ handheld 3D scanner, the GeoSLAM Revo; The Erosion Control Armour Block (ECAB) from Erosion Control Protection Solutions Ltd; Enkolan, a high-performance innovative waterproofing solution from Moy Materials; and the Survipod from Survipod Engineering Solutions Ltd.
The feedback from the Irish BIM Community was very positive and the ICE Awards Team would like to thank everybody for their support on social media on the night and over the days following the Awards.
Established by Irish building magazine, the leading construction media brand for Ireland, the Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards are the most prestigious recognition of performance excellence for the Irish Construction Industry. Speaking of the winners and finalists, ICE Awards Director Colin Walsh said: “The winners and finalists in these three categories are great examples of the work being done in Ireland to develop professionals’ digital skills, the high standards of Irish contractors’ BIM projects, and the technological innovations in Irish construction. These are great projects, products, and courses and we were proud to be able to provide a platform to showcase them at the Mansion House.”
