CitA’s 4th breakfast meeting was titled ‘Early Adopter Experience, BIM Level 2 in the Public Sector – Clinical Education and Research Centre at University Hospital Limerick’ and a packed house learned about delivering a BIM Level 2 public sector project.
The 4th breakfast meeting of the CitA Smarter Cooperative Building Series took place on 21st June. The case study here was the Clinical Education and Research Centre at University Hospital Limerick. The meeting was held at the Royal College of Physicians on Dublin’s Kildare Street. The meeting had a large attendance of over 100 delegates, with presentations on the case study of a milestone public sector BIM project, update on the BICP, and an interactive Q&A session.
Clinical Education and Research Centre at University Hospital Limerick
The Clinical Education and Research Centre (CERC) at University Hospital Limerick was a 3,442m2, €9.1m BIM Level 2 project for the Health Service Executive and University of Limerick. CERC is one of the first public works projects in Ireland which has used BIM Level 2 deliverables from design through construction and on to handover.

The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) were co-organisers of the event. Sean Downey, CIF Director, was the Event Chair. Sean opened the event praising the work of CitA. He told the delegates about the CIF and their work on BIM, their task group and the work of other Construction Industry Council members.

Donal O’Donohue, Director of Coady Architects, was the first speaker. He talked about lessons learnt on the CERC case study and he told attendees BIM was a mechanism that they saw benefit in. The firm does public and private sector work and wanted to test Level 2 BIM on a project. Donal spoke of the CERC project agenda and the benefits of using BIM on the project from design and tendering to construction stage, including being able to show the client the rendered models and spaces. Cillian Kelly, BIM Leader for John Sisk & Son, spoke about Main Contractor BIM Management and how subcontractors used the model for their work packages. The next speaker was Enda Geraghty of John Sisk & Son who presented on the experience of the BIM Level 2 project. Cillian again spoke, this time on using 4D BIM on live projects. Brendan O’Riordan, Zutec CEO, talked about building the Asset Information Model, saying early engagement is essential. Brendan spoke of the company’s large work portfolio. The Q&A session that followed raised many questions, including questions on technical submittals, the tangible benefits of BIM, and convincing clients of the benefits of BIM over the lifecycle.
Dr Barry McAuley, BICP Researcher, gave an update on the BICP research and told delegates about the ‘BIM in Ireland 2017’ report which was launched in mid-June http://www.bicp.ie/irish-bim-study/. He outlined what is coming up in the next six months: Global BIM Study Phase 2, more milestone Case Studies, Regional Workshops, and Deeper Consultations. Barry said, “It is impressive where we are. We are doing some fantastic work.” Suzanne Purcell, CitA General Manager, told delegates about upcoming events and thanked the sponsors. In the closing address, Sean Downey thanked delegates for coming and said he enjoyed the event.
From this event, we learned about using BIM on a public project from a contractor and subcontractor’s perspective, how and an Asset Information Model is built, and the benefits for the designers and the client.
