Following on from its successful BIM Lunch & Learn sessions across the United Kingdom in June, AVEVA will be running 2 more sessions in Ireland this September.
Join in at a session near you and gain an insight into the Energy Sector’s approach to BIM. The session which will be held in Cork and Dublin will reference a recent presentation by Jacobs which describes how they have utilised the existing expertise within their Energy business to drive forward this BIM approach on their Infrastructure projects.
The time for BIM is now
Whatever project you are working on, the efficiencies that can be achieved through BIM workflows are being proven across the construction sector in public and private sector projects.
The use of BIM addresses many issues such as uncoordinated multi-discipline working, poor collaboration, and a short sighted project lifecycle mind-set.
BIM aims to enable:
- Reduced project costs and schedule
- Accelerated commissioning and handover
- Improved building performance, maintenance and operations
For many companies, employing a complete BIM workflow can be a mammoth task. Coupled with the complexity of the available solutions, many are left feeling overwhelmed.
But put simply, BIM encourages businesses in the AEC, Infrastructure, Data Centre and Pharmaceutical sectors to move away from working with disconnected document-based systems, and to adopt more data-centric, collaborative processes.
BIM is much more than 3D
Other software vendors may have led you to believe that in order to comply with BIM you need a complex 3D CAD system, a single database to hold all your information, or a document management system.
In reality, although these systems will help, they will not ultimately achieve full BIM compliance, collaboration, coordination and maximum project efficiency.
Attempting to hold every single piece of relevant information within the 3D CAD system or a single database is simply not realistic. Many aspects of a project are best dealt within specialist applications outside these systems. Equally a document management system only manages revisions of the document and not the data at the source. This can lead to chaos pertaining to who has what document, where it is located and what version they should be working with.
According to the PAS 1192 documentation published by the British Standards Institute, information that is inaccurate, incomplete and ambiguous results in unnecessary additional CAPEX costs amounting to 20-25%.
This additional CAPEX cost can be considered as waste in its purest form, wasting away valuable profit from your bottom line whilst having a knock on effect with future profits resulting in less competitive bids.
In addition, Chemical Engineering Magazine estimate that engineers working with stand-alone computer programs spend 50-80% of their time moving and organizing data between programs.
As a result, this can lead to:
- Lost revenue
- Inefficient handover
- Impact on competitiveness
- Lost work
- Employee layoffs
How can the Energy sector help?
AVEVA have a long and proud history of pioneering data-driven, collaborative engineering, design and information management systems. In fact, many of the principles at the heart of BIM were central to AVEVA long before BIM was introduced. So it’s no surprise the company wholeheartedly support its aims and values – and have a range of technologies that can add value to your BIM execution plan.
As early pioneers of employing a BIM strategy within the Energy Sector,AVEVA have transformed decision making by encouraging a dynamic digital counterpart to every physical asset, true collaborative working and lean principles are already at the heart of our vision.
AVEVA have a refreshing approach which doesn’t require you to manage all your data in 3D CAD systems or a single database. It believes that by taking the Energy Sector’s object centric rather than document centric approach, the most collaborative way forward is to work with a powerful information management hub that complements and integrates with your existing design toolset. This is then used to control, link, evaluate and deliver all types of data and documents in a secure environment, regardless of application and format.
