The CitA Western BIM Region held an evening event last week at the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) on Tuesday, 3rd November to help promote awareness and uptake of BIM.

The CitA Western BIM Region, one of CitA’s four BIM Regions, was set up to promote collaborative working across organisations and reports progress made by Irish companies operating in Ireland and Britain.

Mark Costello is the founding chairman of the CitA Western BIM Region and Director for BIM in RPS. Mark has over twenty years’ experience of large infrastructural projects. Mark has been awarded the BIM Accredited Professional badge of approval from the BRE Academy (AP/PIM/TIM) and is also a member of building SMART, CitA, and Engineers Ireland.

The Western BIM Regional meeting held in GMIT, had a great attendance with representatives from a wide range of BIM stakeholders including public bodies and private companies, engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, construction managers, educators and researchers, hardware and software suppliers.

Attendees were welcomed by Mary Rogers, Head of Department of Building & Civil Engineering at GMIT. Mark Costello (Chairperson) gave an update on Digital Construction Week 2015 (DCW) which took place in London in October. The Western BIM Region’s representatives attended the opening of DCW at the Irish Embassy in London and presented at both the BIM Ireland Pavilion and the BIM4Communities Village.

Dr David Collery, Lecturer at GMIT, presented a BIM case study: ‘The Clacton on Sea Coastal Protection Scheme Project’. Lee Mullin, Autodesk (Construction Technical Specialist for Northern Europe/European Construction Virtual Team) along with Andrew Jenkins and Martyn Stoneham gave the keynote presentation on ‘Going Digital, Bridging the gap between Office and the Construction Site’.

Michelle Fahey (BIM Implementation Manager) and Sean O’Dwyer, JJ Rhatigan & Company (JJR) presented a case study on the construction of the new Garda Divisional Headquarters in Galway City which JJR is working on in a BIM environment.

Presentations were followed by a lively questions and answers session. Jim O Connor, Lecturer at GMIT, gave the closing address and invited all to network over tea and coffee kindly provided by GMIT.
