Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow) has just announced a new Master of Science degree programme to begin this September – the MSc Management in the Built Environment.
The course is aimed at improving management competency in the built environment, on both the developer/design team side, and on the contracting side. Graduates will be qualified to work anywhere across the built environment sector, from development, design, procurement, construction and management of new buildings or the refurbishment of existing structures. The course is suitable for facilities managers, architectural technicians, civil engineers, architects, construction and project managers.
The M.Sc. Management in the Built Environment can be studied for one year full time or over two years part time. Students on thepart-time course may avail of an embedded exit award at HDip. after one year.
BIM management
Those undertaking the master’s course will study mandatory modules in: leadership strategy and self-management; construction project management; BIM management; building economics and life cycle cost analysis, as well as research methods. Two further electives must be chosen from a list that includes: legal aspects of management in built environment; public procurement of construction; retrofitting and building fabric and facilities management.
The programme ensures that the learners will have an in-depth knowledge of the underlying theories, key concepts and technologies within the discipline area of the built environment. Graduates will be able to analyse the complex contemporary challenge and issues in management of the built environment and integrate and apply this knowledge to formulate creative and innovative solutions.
The will develop a capacity for critical thinking within their disciplines and demonstrate an ability to bring their expertise to bear on real world problems and challenges in the built environment. They will be equipped to lead, develop and manage within a range of built environment organisations.
