The Construction IT Alliance (CitA) has been heading up national initiatives, supported by Enterprise Ireland, Skillnets and the constituent members of the Construction Industry Council (CIC), to facilitate the adoption of digital technologies and improved productivity in the construction sector, including BIM (Building Information Modelling).

In 2015, CitA were invited to become honorary members of the UK BIM Regions Network, following which CitA established 3 regional groups in the East, South & West of Ireland. This network has recently been expanded to 9 locations around Ireland.

Through the CitA BIM Regions Network, CitA aim to support individuals, organisations and companies in the construction industry, at “grass roots” in local areas, with events, information, and subsidized training, to expose people to the benefits around “digital construction” and provide a network for people to develop broader commercial business opportunities.

One of the purposes of the BIM Regions, is to help get a consistent message about BIM level 2 (to PAS1192-2 standard) into the various regions, to both industry and academia (“consistency” being the key word – to get people to understand and follow the standards), to reach and connect with the construction industry and instigate productivity improvements at “scale”.

The charter of the BIM regions is to share information, and collaborate, and generally work together to raise the level of awareness and skill in industry in digitisation. There is also an aspiration to promote more “diversity” in the construction sector, to educate and encourage young people to see “digital construction” as a relevant, exciting, and lucrative career choice.
